[2005 Jmovie] SHISSOU - Dead Run

Japan 2005, 35mm, 124 Min.
Director: SABU
Screenplay: SABU - based on a novel by Kiyoshi SHIGEMATSU
Production: IMJ Entertainment
Cinematographer: Masao NAKABORI
Kadokawa Herald Pictures, Inc.

Synopsis (Spoiler !)

***On one of his daily adventures to the outskirts of his home-town, seven year-old Shuji's bicycle breaks down and he accepts a ride home from a 'Yakuza' who calls himself Demonken. Demonken and his girlfriend are looked down upon by the neighboring townspeople, but despite the attitudes of those around him, Shuji is touched by Demonken's kindness. Upon learning of Demonken's sudden and mysterious death a few days later, he cries alone.
Years later, in Junior high school, Shuji visits a small Christian church in Oki with his best friend, Tetsuo. Shuji discovers that a fellow classmate, a girl named Eri, also frequents the church and, upon learning of her sad history, she becomes the object of Shuji's affections. As he is drawn closer to Father Yuichi, Shuji's older brother Shuichi presses him to confront the rumours about possible crimes Yuichi may have committed.
Meanwhile, in Shuji's hometown a plan to develop a huge resort is unfolding. Expensive black cars and suspicious looking men arrive, property values sharply increase, and the residents are driven away.
Eri is seriously injured on an evening jog when an out-of-control truck loses it's load of rocks. With money from the settlement, Eri's Aunt and Uncle leave Oki and take Eri to Tokyo. Soon afterwards, the economy takes a dive and forces the suspension of the resort's development, with the half-finished construction left abandoned. Shuji's surroundings become enveloped in a shadow, and he is harshly disciplined for cheating at the prestigious high school he attends. Withdrawing from society and involving himself with criminal activities, he also falls deeper into isolation at school. Shuji's father's whereabouts are unknown, and his mother is forced to disappear.
Father Yuichi takes an interest in Shuji's care, but his attempts to inspire are unsuccessful. With great anger and sadness, Shuji holds a piece of glass to his wrist, but he can't do it. Alone and miserable, Shuji develops an overwhelming desire to be reunited with Eri, and he flees to Tokyo. On the way, he meets an older woman and loses his virginity, but in the process suffers the wrath of a jealous boyfriend. In self-defense, he is forced to kill. After the murder, Shuji and his friend split up, and he finds himself alone again.
Shuji finally makes it to Tokyo where he reunites with Eri, and the pair find themselves in the same abyss of despair. Shuji and Eri run for their lives down the only path left, with an all too heroic fate awaiting them.

***A rich coming-of-age pic that sure-handedly reflects the complexity of the novel on which it's based, "Dead Run" is the satisfying eighth film from thesp-turned helmer Sabu (Hiroyuki Tanaka), and reps the first time he's strayed from an original script. Stately pacing and existential feel render pic a commercial challenge, but these very same traits will create strong word of mouth that will interest fests and high-end distribs. In the western Japanese town of Hama, young Shuji (Yuya Tegoshi) is content to live in the shadow of his over-achieving older brother, Shuichi. At a nearby church the pair discovers what they believe to be the criminal past of Father Yuichi (Etsushi Toyokawa), who narrates proceedings. Meanwhile, Shuji becomes friends with defiant loner classmate Eri (Hanae Kan), orphaned after the suicide of her parents.
Against the backdrop of a doomed resort development in the town, Shuichi's behavior becomes increasingly violent and he turns to arson. When their parents disappear and Shuichi is sent to prison, Father Yuichi attempts to keep the siblings in touch with each other. Meanwhile, Eri's family moves to Tokyo.
Following a failed suicide attempt, Shuji embarks on a pilgrimage to find Eri. Along the way he hooks up with moll Akane (Miki Nakatani). This results in a nightmarish encounter with gangster Nitta (Ren Ohsugi, from Takeshi Kitano's "Fireworks"). Helmer, whose first film as director was 1996's "Dangan Runner," exhibits an exhilaratingly focused command of provocative material. Like a long, winding river, Shuji's story unfolds at leisure and with satisfying incident and character detail. Adolescence, his film instructs, is an emotional dead run often discounted or forgotten altogether during the pragmatic day-to-day living of adulthood. Tegoshi is vaguely surly yet ultimately sympathetic as Shuji, while Kan continues the intensity shown in previous efforts "Pistol Opera" and "Nobody Knows."

Shuji is struggling to grow up in a small seaside town that is being redeveloped to become a major resort. He starts going to church with his cynical older brother and there he meets the orphan girl Eri, who is in his class at school. Shuji develops a crush on her and takes up running so that he can spend more time with her. however, when Eri is injured when a truck's cargo falls on her, her relatives whisk her away to Tokyo. Shuji is desperate to go after her, but his journey will not be an easy one as he encounters yakuza, prostitues and a priest with a shady past.
Starring Tegoshi Yuya and Kan Hanae, Dead Run (a.k.a. Shisso) is a desperate teenage adventure, a dark and poweful tale of growing up and first love....

Shuji & Eri

Shuji and Eri are in the same class at school. One day, when Shuji is attending a Christian church with a friend he notices his classmate Eri, who is his age. Eri is an orphan, her parents committed suicide. Over the next few months the two 15-year-olds become friends.
Shuji is overshadowed by his older brother, who tells him that Pater Yuichi, in whom he has also found a good friend at the church, is alleged to have a criminal past.
Meanwhile, Shuji's native town Hama is being turned into a holiday resort. The place is flooded with property speculators and investors and in no time property prices begin to soar, forcing the local population to find cheaper places to live. One evening, a passing lorry loses its load and Eri, who happens to be in the area, is struck by a falling piece of rock and badly injured. The money they receive in compensation enables Eri's relatives to move away to Tokyo, taking Eri with them.
Shortly afterwards, an economic crisis causes the construction work to come to a halt , even though the new buildings are only half-finished. Shuji's life also takes a downward turn. Increasingly isolated at school, he drifts into criminal activities and refuses to let anyone, even Pater Yuichi helps him.
Longing to be reunited with Eri he sets off for Tokyo. After a series of nervewracking and nightmarish experiences with the prostitute Akane and the gangster Nitta he finally manages to track her down. And so they meet again, two souls in desperation...
